Being well prepared for your family photo session can make the difference between average and fabulous photos. Follow these easy tips and you’ll be well on your way to looking your absolute best. If you have any additional questions, feel free to contact us.

Some guidelines for how to dress for your family portrait session:

Avoid shirts with graphics or logos. These will distract from faces and expressions in a photo!

Don’t be afraid of color.

Dress kids in clothes that will be comfortable to THEM.

Avoid wearing white if at all possible. This draws attention to the white clothing instead of the most important part of the photo, YOU!

Sample family styling:

Coordinating the family is not as difficult as it sounds. Do not, under any circumstances, come dressed alike. This is not a team photo, it is a family portrait. Instead of doing the “matching” thing, do the “coordinating” thing. I’ll explain how we would style a sample family with a mom and dad, boy and girl.

Let’s start with the little girl. Pick an outfit that you absolutely love, one with bright colors or a pretty pattern. Let’s say this outfit has deep pinks, greens, light blues, and some white. Everyone else can wear jeans or khakis (or shorts in a similar color palette). For the little boy, he will wear a solid light blue coordinating shirt to match his sister’s. Then dad will wear a green button down shirt or polo that goes with his little girl’s dress. Mom wears a shirt or dress in a coordinating color or with a light pattern that complements the little girl’s dress.

Does your child have something that defines them, something they’re never seen without? A blanket, a favorite teddy bear? Bring it along and we’ll include it in a picture or two to make you smile.
